Most morning neck pain is not caused by the neck. It is caused by seven hours of the head being held at the wrong angle, and the object holding it there is the pillow. Buckwheat pillows come up constantly in that conversation, and for a specific mechanical reason rather than anything mystical about the fill: hulls hold a fixed height all night, and a fixed height is exactly what a stiff neck needs.

A simple test: have someone photograph you lying in your usual position. Draw a line down your spine and up through your neck. If it kinks at the collar, the pillow height is wrong.
Why a soft pillow causes stiffness by morning
Here is the part that gets missed. A down or polyester pillow may be the right height at the moment you lie down — and the wrong height ninety minutes later.
